IN VIGIA - 3rd FISHING COMMUNITY IN BRAZIL
The
town where everything started over 20 years ago, has about 42,000
inhabitants and fishing as its major economic activity, which
is predominantly traditional and small scale. Besides fishing,
another quite extensive activity is catching crabs, which provides
a good supplementary income that helps support the residents and
their families.
The
municipality is one of the oldest in Pará State. The first
residents were the Tupinambás Indians, whose village was
called Uruitá. It was here that the colonial government
built an inspection post, not only for this purposem, but also
to protect and keep watch on the vessels that supplied Belém,
thus curbing smuggling. It was this activity that gave rise to
the name of the place.
